The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed 27 officers from its workforce over “fraudulent activities and misconduct.”
The action, taken in 2024, was based on the recommendation of the EFCC Staff Disciplinary Committee and was ratified by the Commission’s Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede.
In a statement issued on Monday, Olukoyede reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to integrity and zero tolerance for corruption.
“Every modicum of allegation against any staff of the Commission would always be investigated, including a trending $400,000 claim of a yet-to-be-identified supposed staff of the EFCC against a Sectional Head,” Dele Oyewale, the Commission’s head of media and publicity, stated.
“The core values of the Commission are sacrosanct and would always be held in optimal regard at all times.”
The EFCC also warned the public about impersonators using the name of its Executive Chairman to extort money from high-profile suspects.
Two alleged members of such a syndicate, Ojobo Joshua and Aliyu Hashim, were recently arraigned before Justice Jude Onwuebuzie of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja.
They were accused of contacting a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Mr. Mohammed Bello-Kaka, and demanding $1 million for “soft landing” in a purported investigation.
Oyewale described Olukoyede as a man of integrity who “cannot be swayed by monetary influences.” He urged the public to report any fraudulent activities or impersonation attempts.
Additionally, the EFCC revealed ongoing attempts to blackmail its officers by individuals under investigation for financial crimes.
“Suspects being investigated for some economic and financial crimes who have failed to compromise their investigators would always clutch at any straw,” Oyewale noted, warning that such tactics should not be given any attention.
