A suspected bomb explosion at the Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School in Kuchibuyi Village, Byazhin area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has left two people dead and two others injured.
The incident, which happened on Monday at about 11:00 a.m., has been confirmed by the FCT Police Command.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, three men from Katsina State, who were visiting the school, were suspected to have brought the improvised explosive device (IED).
“Tragically, two of the men died in the explosion while tampering with the improvised explosive device (IED), on the school veranda, while the third man and a female trader sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving treatment under police guard,” she said.
“The area was immediately cordoned off to protect residents and facilitate a thorough investigation. During the rescue operation, victims were promptly evacuated and rushed to the hospital for medical attention.”
Adeh further disclosed that remnants of the IED had been recovered by the FCT Bomb Squad, confirming the nature of the explosion.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the three men had been visiting the school’s owner, Mallam Adamu Ashimu, who has now been taken into custody for questioning.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT, Olatunji Disu, has called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or items resembling explosive devices to the authorities.
It remains unclear whether students were present during the explosion, as most schools in the area are expected to resume on January 13, while Islamic schools often follow different calendars.
