An official of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Aliyu Imran, was brutally murdered by a mob in the Gadan-Gayan area of Igabi Local Government Area, Kaduna State.
Imran, an Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics 1, was reportedly burnt alive after a police chase involving NDLEA officers ended in a fatal accident.
According to reports, Imran and his colleagues were pursuing a suspected drug dealer when the suspect reversed his vehicle, hitting several pedestrians and killing at least three people on the spot. The tragic accident sparked outrage among residents, who turned on the NDLEA officers.
A source revealed that Imran had attempted to calm the growing tension when he was attacked by the mob. He was stabbed multiple times while the Officer-in-Charge (OC) called for reinforcements.
A police officer managed to transport him to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention, but the mob later stormed the hospital, dragged him out, and set him ablaze.
Narrating the sequence of events, a source explained, “Some officers were on patrol, and the suspect reversed and started driving away from the officers. So the officers pursued the vehicle. In the process, the suspect’s car had an accident and killed four people.
“When our officers reached there, Aliyu Imran stepped out to calm the situation, but the people started attacking him. Even me, I’ve been involved in that kind of situation before. Normally, the moment you see the place is starting to get tense, you leave immediately.
“So when he came down to try to calm the situation down, the OC—the person that led the operation—started saying, ‘Okay, you guys should inbox.’ Like, let’s go. When you say ‘inbox,’ it means you should enter the car—let’s leave.
“So, in the process, they left Aliyu Imran in that place. Those guys stabbed him. After stabbing him, one police officer there took him on his bike to one hospital close to that place for treatment.”
The mob, however, followed the police officer to the hospital, dragged Imran out, and burnt him alive, he explained.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi confirmed the incident, saying that the commander involved has been suspended.
“This is an ongoing investigation. The matter is being thoroughly looked into, and the agency remains in close contact with the family. We are working diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he added.
