The Gari Waye community in Angwan Rukuba of Jos North LGA in Plateau state, on Sunday, March 29, 2026, came under attack, leaving 28 persons dead, and several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
In a swift reaction, the Government of Plateau State immediately imposed a 48-hour restriction on Jos North Local Government Area to forestall any breakdown of law and order as a result of the attack, which occurred around 7:30 pm while residents of the area were going about their normal activities.
In a statewide broadcast, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, while expressing deep sorrow over the killing of 28 persons during the attack, described the incident as tragic and senseless, plunging families and the entire state into mourning.
Mutfwang extended condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for strength and comfort for them in this difficult time, assured that the government will provide support to families of the deceased, including engagement with community leaders to ensure dignified burials.
The Governor revealed that security agencies had apprehended a suspect who had earlier issued threats against the peace of the state, vowed that all those involved in the attack would be brought to justice, stressing that the government would pursue the case to its logical conclusion.
Mutfwang said, “I am pleased to inform you that security agencies have apprehended a suspect who had earlier issued threats against the peace of our state.
“Let me assure you that every necessary measure is being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and safeguard lives and property across the state”.
Mutfwang commended residents of Angwan Rukuba and the wider Plateau community for their restraint and refusal to retaliate despite provocation, urged community leaders, youth groups, and religious leaders to promote dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.
“I urge community leaders, youth groups, religious leaders, and all stakeholders to partner with the government in promoting dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect. Together, we will overcome these challenges and build a more peaceful, secure, and united Plateau State,” he said.
The Governor urged citizens to remain calm, law-abiding, united, vigilant, and report any suspicious movements or activities to security agencies.
He directed strict enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycle operators within the Jos Greater Master Plan area as part of efforts to strengthen security and prevent further breaches.
