NewsNigeriaPolitics58 Terrorist Suspects Face Trial as FG Shifts Proceedings to Abuja

The Federal Government has commenced the mass trial of suspects charged with terrorism-related offenses at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, marking a shift from the usual venue in Kainji, Niger State.

The proceedings, which began on Monday, are being conducted simultaneously across multiple courtrooms and are expected to last four days, in what officials describe as one of the largest coordinated terrorism trials in recent years.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, is leading the prosecution, while the Director-General of the Legal Aid Council, Aliyu Abubakar, heads the defence team representing the accused persons.

Some of the judges presiding over the cases include Justices Binta Nyako, Emeka Nwite, Musa Liman, James Omotosho, Obiora Egwuatu, and Ekerete Akpan.

No fewer than 58 suspected terrorists were listed for trial on Monday before Justice Nwite alone, underscoring the scale of the exercise.

In recent years, the Federal Government has adopted mass trial procedures to fast-track the handling of terrorism cases, many of which involve suspects detained during military operations in the North-East and North-West.
