The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, has fixed 2 July for a special traditional ceremony aimed at invoking ancestral sanctions against terrorists, kidnappers, bandits and other criminal elements responsible for insecurity across Nigeria.
The ceremony, expected to attract traditional leaders, palace chiefs, community representatives and residents from different parts of Edo State, is being seen as a symbolic response to the growing security challenges facing the country.
Palace sources disclosed that the event will focus on seeking divine intervention and invoking traditional justice against individuals involved in terrorism, kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence and other criminal activities that have continued to threaten lives and livelihoods.
The development comes amid rising concerns over persistent insecurity in several parts of the country, with communities increasingly expressing fears over the activities of criminal groups and calling for stronger measures to tackle the situation.
A palace official familiar with the arrangements said the ceremony would be conducted in accordance with Benin customs and traditions and would reinforce the collective resolve of citizens against criminality.
“The kingdom has always stood for justice, peace, and the protection of innocent lives. This event is meant to demonstrate the determination of the traditional institution to support all lawful efforts aimed at restoring security and stability,” the source said.
Residents of Benin City and neighbouring communities have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a reflection of growing public frustration over insecurity and the need for all stakeholders to contribute towards finding lasting solutions.
The palace is expected to release further details of the program in the coming days, while participants and guests are expected to gather for what many have described as a significant cultural and spiritual statement against terrorism and insecurity.
