…Rejects Global Regulation
US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will henceforth refer to artificial intelligence as “Super Intelligence”, arguing that the new term better reflects the technology’s capabilities.
Trump made the announcement on Tuesday while addressing world leaders at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
He also rejected efforts to establish a global framework for regulating artificial intelligence, saying the United States would not support what he described as a “globalist scheme” to control the technology.
“The United States also totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control the artificial intelligence being spoken of so much now, hereinafter officially called Super Intelligence, changing the name,” Trump said.
He said the word “artificial” gave the impression that the technology’s intelligence was not genuine.
“In that the use of the word artificial makes intelligence fake. It makes it sound fake, and it is not fake. It’s actually amazing, but we have to be careful,” he said.
Trump said the change would be reflected in official US government documents and expressed hope that other countries would adopt the terminology.
“In fact, it is exactly the opposite of what it purports. From this point forward, all of the United States documents, and hopefully the world’s, will be changed to use the much more accurate term: super, as opposed to artificial. So, it’s Super Intelligence,” he said.
He added, “In other words, welcome to the new world of Super Intelligence, SI. SI. Let’s see if that goes. It sounds much better, it is much better, and it’s much more accurate. Let’s see if I have any power. Maybe I do, and maybe I don’t. We’re going to find out pretty soon.”
Trump rejects global AI rules
Trump’s announcement came amid growing international debate over how governments should regulate the rapid development of artificial intelligence.
Reuters reported that Trump used his UN address to reiterate his opposition to new international regulations on AI, while saying US law enforcement agencies could intervene if the technology needed to be restrained.
His position contrasts with calls from a group of countries for stronger international oversight. According to the European news agency EFE, representatives from 22 countries and institutions had called for AI to remain under human direction, supervision, and control, and for countries to establish common standards for the technology.
The signatories included representatives from countries such as Canada, Germany, Kenya, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.
Trump has previously argued that the United States should maintain its lead in AI development rather than slow the technology because of concerns about potential risks.
Name change follows social media poll
The President’s UN announcement came a day after he floated the proposed terminology on his Truth Social platform.
Trump had asked his followers to consider alternatives to “Artificial Intelligence,” including “Superior Intelligence, “Extreme Intelligence,” and “Supreme Intelligence.”
He subsequently said he would promote “AI or SI (SUPER INTELLIGENCE)”, while maintaining that the US would intervene if necessary through law enforcement agencies.
The new terminology announced by Trump does not change the technology itself; it is a proposed change in how the US government refers to it.
Trump’s announcement has nevertheless placed the terminology debate alongside the wider dispute over AI safety, regulation and competition among major powers. The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that the proposed change would be reflected in US government documents, while the announcement came against a backdrop of growing international concern about the risks posed by rapidly advancing AI systems.
