A Black-American, 30-year old middle school social studies teacher, Rana Zoe Mungin in Brooklyn, United State had died of COVID-19 after a month struggle. She had twice turned away for testing before being diagnosed with the virus.

Mungin, who died on Monday afternoon, had been struggling with life in the hospital. Her mother said.

Her family said the plea for help was repeatedly made as she exhibited various symptoms of the virus. She was denied testing of COVID-19 twice at Brooklyn’s Brookdale Hospital.

According to ABC News, it was the same hospital that her sister died of asthma 15 years ago.

Mia Mungin, a registered nurse in the New York City nurse, had been sharing her sister narrative on social media for more than a month. See her last post on it, she said “she fought a long fight but her body was so weak:

Mia Mungin wrote about the racial disparities in the health care system, including the care her sister received as a black. She said, “Racism and health disparities continue… [and] the zip code in which we live still predetermines the type of care we receive,”

According to ABC News, her case echoes startling data released by the CDC showing that African Americans are being severely impacted by COVID-19 nationwide, accounting for 30% of coronavirus cases in the U.S. despite only comprising approximately 13% of the population.

Rana Zoe Mungin taught at Ascend Academy in East New York, Brooklyn, an area of New York City that’s among the hardest-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, according to data from the state’s health department.

She was a first-generation college student who received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Wellesley College and later earned a Master of Fine Arts from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in Creative Writing.
