An eighty-room hotel in southeast China, used as a quarantine facility for persons exposed to coronavirus has collapsed, according to reports
According to the Daily Maily, the Xinjia Hotel, located in Quanzhou City in Fujian province, collapsed on Saturday, around 7:30pm.
The Ministry of Emergency Management, said at least 34 people had been rescued as at 10pm local time. Videos posted online show rescue officials combing through the wreckage.
News report say the hotel was one of the two converted to a medical surveillance facility for people with close contact with coronavirus patients.
A man living across the hotel said he thought the collapse was an explosion.
“I was just having dinner and I suddenly heard a loud bang and thought it was an explosion. It was not until I ran to my balcony that I saw that the entire hotel building had collapsed,” Chinese local media quoted the man as saying.
The hotel was opened in June 2018.
