The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has carried out a mass sack of 50 per cent of its workers, a notice pasted at the National Secretariat of the party revealed.

In what appears as the result of a financial crisis, 62 officials and other members of staff were affected by the mass disengagement. Those affected include 4 directors, two deputy directors, 6 assistant directors, seventeen supervisors, 14 intermediate staff and nineteen junior staff.

The workers were notified through a memo signed by Mr. Agbo Emmanuel and pasted on March 6 at the party’s secretariat.

“The NEC members on staff rationalization in the National Executive Committee meeting of February 22 was mandated to implement the committee’s recommendation of downsizing 50 per cent of staff strength,” part of the memo reads.

Some employees alleged that they were owed four months of consolidated housing allowance for 2019 despite the party realising N6bn from the sale of forms for the 2019 general elections.

The party stated in the memo, the conditions upon which affected workers would be paid.

“Affected staff must first show evidence of disengagement signed by the national secretary’s office before payment.

“All affected staff must be cleared and issued clearance certificates indicating that they are not financially or materially indebted to the party. Consequently, upon the above, all affected staff must hand over all party documents, materials, office keys and their identity cards to enable clearance,” the memo reads.

Recall that in 2015, two weeks after the PDP lost the Presidential election to the All Progressive Congress (APC), its contract staff went on an indefinite strike action, protesting non-payment of 3 months salaries.

Also, in 2015, some workers of the Nasarawa State chapter of the PDP held the party chairman, Chief Yunana K. Iliya and other members hostage for several hours for not paying their salaries and allowances for several months.
