Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, wife of Anambra Governor and founder, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE), has reunited 10 rehabilitated mentally ill patients with their families.
The reunion followed the inauguration of a skills acquisition centre, power installation and sick bay for the mentally ill at CAFÉ’s facility in Nteje, Oyi Local Government Area of the state, on Tuesday.
“It is a thing of joy now that we can manage inmates by offering them immediate attention at the centre before referral in emergency situations.
“There is no doubt that we have made tremendous progress in caring for the less privileged through CAFÉ.
“We will continue to support this facility, working in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs,” Mrs Obiano said.
The governor’s wife said the centre had successfully treated and rehabilitated 110 mentally ill inmates since its inception in 2015.
While commending her husband, Chief Willie Obiano for his support, she urged people of goodwill to lend a helping hand to the centre by donating items that would aid in the speedy recovery of inmates.
Earlier, the state Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mezue, said the centre witnessed geometric increase in the number of inmates as a result of regular raids on the streets.
Mezue expressed the determination of the State government to sustain the raid in a bid to completely rid the streets of mentally challenged persons.
The commissioner noted that the skills centre would better equip rehabilitated inmates, as well as indigent women and youths, with skills for effective re-integration into the society.
“This centre is a product of visionary leadership, so we encourage those rehabilitated to learn skills to contribute to the overall socio-economic development of the state,” she stressed.
In separate remarks, two of the rehabilitated inmates, Miss Chinyere Egonum and Mrs Obiageli Achume from Nise and Oraukwu communities, expressed gratitude over the kindness shown to them.
