Nadine Dorries, Junior Minister for Health in the UK has confirmed in a statement that she has tested positive to COVID-19.
This is coming days after she attended an International Women’s Day event last Thursday, where the Prime Minister and hundreds of people in the Parliament were present. Reports say she had close contact with hundreds of people at the meeting.
She was reported to have fallen ill last Friday. It is not clear who infected her, but report say the 62-year-old politician is now in isolation and was recovering.
In a statement, Dorries said: “I can confirm I have tested positive for Coronavirus.
“As soon as I was informed, I took all the advised precautions and have been self-isolating at home.
“Public Health England has started, and the department and my parliamentary office are closely following their advice.
“I would like to thank PHE and the wonderful NHS staff who have provided me with advice and support.”
Efforts are on to identify those she has had contacts with, including members of parliament and test them.
Worried that her 84-year-old mother had been infected because she began coughing today, Dorries later wrote on Twitter that her mother would be tested tomorrow.
Reacting to the development’ UK Minister of Health, Matt Hancock said: “I understand why people are worried about this disease. We will do all we can to keep people safe, based on the best possible science.”
As at early hours of Wednesday, 373 people have tested positive for the virus across the United Kingdom and six people have died.
