Kano State Government says it has ordered for the production of 1 million face masks as part of an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the State.
Gov.Abdullahi Umar Ganduje who dropped the hint while addressing journalists at a news conference said that the State Government will make the wearing of the face masks compulsory when the production is completed.
“We have also directed all the 44 Local Governments in the State to produce face masks for their people he said “.
Ganduje commended the frontline health workers for their courage and determination towards fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
He assures them that his administration is committed to their safety and prevention from infection as such it will provide accommodation for them as part of measures of curbing the spread of the disease to their families.
On security matters, the Governor explained that 10 mobile courts have been established to try violators of the lockdown particularly since all the borders have been closed to prevent inter-state transmission, adding that due to the enormous of the task, the State Government has started registering new Constabularies to support the effort of the police.
He added that the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 is doing its best to resuscitate the NCDC testing centre at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital which has not been operating for some days.
He, therefore, appealed to the Federal Government for additional testing centres due to the number of cases in the State.
Also speaking, the Deputy Governor, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna who also doubles as the Chairman State Task Force Committee on COVID-19 urged the people of the State to remember that curbing the spread of COVID-19 is a responsibility for everyone and as such citizens must be vigilant and report any suspected case to the committee for prompt action.
He further emphasised that there is no reason for stigmatisation and discrimination but to encourage testing which is one of the best ways of identifying cases and prevention of community transmission.
The Coordinator of the Technical Response Team for COVID-19, Dr.Tijjani Hussaini in his speech revealed the situation as on 24th April 2020 that there 489 suspected cases out of which 74 were confirmed positive for COVID-19 in the State.
