The Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta on Sunday confirmed the death of a pregnant woman as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The management said it has shut down the Accident and Emergency Complex of the center where the death occurred.

According to Segun Orisajo, the Head of the Public Relations Unit of the center, the pregnant woman died on Friday.

The death of the woman had created fears among the workers in the hospital since Friday.it was reported that four workers attended to the woman before she died.

The concern was that the health workers that attended to the woman might have been exposed to the virus. Their samples were taken for test and results are yet to be available.

Orisajo in his reaction said the incident involved three persons. Two of them were women.

Orisajo said, “Three suspected cases were being managed at the Accident and Emergency Complex of the Centre within last week.

“However, two of the patients tested positive while one was negative. One of the patients who tested positive was a pregnant woman who passed on on Friday. Her result returned positive on Saturday.”

The PRO included that the corpse had been released to her husband by the management. He said this was done after careful counseling and strict adherence to the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) in such a case.

Orisajo said the second case was a young man who had been transferred to the state isolation center.

He said “The second patient is a young man who has been transferred to an isolation center in the state.

“He is clinically stable. Both patients were managed in the accident and emergency complex.”

While allaying fears, the hospital spokesperson said there was no cause for alarm over the state of health of workers who attended to the patients.
