Many Muslims in most parts of Nigeria have today Saturday observed the Eid el- Fitr prayer marking the end of Ramadan, in defiance of the announcement made by Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar that the Sallah be observed tomorrow Sunday.

In Bauchi, Yobe, Sokoto and other states just as in the neighboring Niger Republic, a section of the Dariqa and Izala’s sects, were reported to have ended their fast on Friday and observed Sallah today Saturday.

Defending their action, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi one of the top spiritual leaders of Darika sect in Nigeria said the new moon of Shawwal was sighted in parts of Nigeria.

‘’Reports reaching us indicates that the crescent moon of Shawwal was sighted and therefore tomorrow no fasting and Eid-El Fitr be observed in accordance with the teachings of Islam and injunctions enshrined that whenever the moon was sighted by two just persons or Jama’atul Mustafida which started by five persons adults and sane.

‘’ Here in Bauchi 8 persons sighted the crescent moon, in Liman Katagun 10 persons, we also got reports from Gaidam in Yobe state many people sighted it just as in Zaria, Kaduna state, and Yawuri in Kebbi states respectively.

‘’So haven sighted by many in many places ends the month of Ramadan and Shawwal commenced, therefore, Eid-El Fitr be observed this Saturday.

In a viral audio message being circulated, Sheikh Bauchi said that he was reliable told  the Sultan was informed  about the sighting of the moon, ‘’ but he told them already decision taken to observe Eid-el fitr  on Sunday is irreversible.’’

Indications that the Sallah celebration will be observed on Sunday started emanating about three days ago when it was said the moon sighting body in Saudi Arabia said it will not be possible for the moon to be sighted on Friday, meaning Sallah will be observed on Sunday.

The Sultan then adopted the position of Saudi Arabia after claiming that it has not sighted the crescent on Friday and declared Sunday as Eid-el-fitr day.

This year’s Eid el fitr is being celebrated amid the novel coronavirus pandemic that forced states to suspend merry-making festivities.
