Rita Dominic has dazzled lovers of Nigerian movies with her acting for over 20-years. Her beauty and superb ability to interpret roles made her popular with film producers and famous not only in Africa but other parts of the world.

Rita Uchenna Nkem Dominic Nwaturocha, 44, is a member of the Nwaturuocha Royal Family of Aboh Mbaise in Imo State.   She is the last of four children born to a family of health professionals – her father was a doctor and her mother a nursing officer. Although Rita Dominic studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt and graduated in 1991, her love for acting began as a child.

She began professional acting in 1998 when she starred in her first movie, A Time to Kill. Twenty years later, Rita Dominic has acted in over 100 Nigerian movies. With consistency and hard work, the first recognition for her talent came when she won the Most Outstanding Actress award category at the 2004 City People Awards.

Rita Dominic’s performance in movies, including Shattered, Finding Mercy, The Meeting, 76 and Light in the Dark won her prestigious awards and nominations. She played Keziah Njema in the Kenyan movie, Shattered. It received 12 nominations – won four — at the African Movie Academy Awards in 2008. In the movie, ‘Finding Mercy’, Rita Dominic’s performance won her the BON Awards ‘Best Supporting Actress Award’ category and a nomination in the ‘Best Kiss in a Movie’ category. In 2013, she won the Female Producer of the Year category of the Eloy Awards.

In the movie, ‘The Meeting’, Rita Dominic’s role as a powerful secretary to a minister, won her the Best Lead Actress award in the 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. ‘Light in the Dark’, released in January 2019 and currently available on Netflix, saw Rita Dominic play a Yoruba lady married to an Igbo man despite their parents’ disapproval. The movie binds an emotional story with a crime story using social consciousness. A fan on Twitter, described Rita Dominic’s performance in ‘Light in the Dark’ as ‘gold’.

She said, “I have always said I would marry the man of my dream, not the man society dreams for me. Society finds something wrong with you when you are of a certain age and you are not married. But I think it’s the society that something is wrong with for wanting someone to do something on its own terms and not on the person’s own terms.”

Like old wine, Rita Dominic, actress cum movie producer has kept her craft polished, refined and fresh. She is still in the game.

According to Dominic, “I almost got married to someone… But I’m kind of happy it didn’t happen because there were signs that it would not have worked out well… A grown man cannot be changed… I can be erratic. I can be unpredictable and I used to be hot-tempered, she said while admitting that she had faults too.”

Rita Dominic does not favor displaying opulence on social media. She recently criticised people who hold the opinion that those who do not post their material wealth on social media are poor.

In 2011, she was conferred Member of the Order of Federal Republic (MFR) by the Nigerian Government for her contribution to economic growth and development to the country entertainment. Like old wine, Rita Dominic, actress cum movie producer has kept her craft polished, refined and fresh. She is still in the game.
