CoronavirusNewsNigeriaWhy Ogun State Suspended COVID-19 Task Force Official

Some officials enforcing the COVID-19 movement restriction in Ogun State have been suspended for allegedly assaulting a woman whom the Task Force claimed had violated movement restriction.

The sanction by the Transition Chairman of Ifo Local Government Area in Ogun State, Hon. Fola Salami, came following a video of the alleged assault by one Mr Peter, posted on social media.

In threads of tweets, a woman identified as Tolu Adesh, said while going to purchase items for her daughter’s birthday, she was stopped by officials of Ogun State COVID-19 movement restriction team at the border between Lagos and Ogun.

She stated that she was not aware that she had crossed into Ogun because the border was not properly marked, and was subsequently arrested by the Task Force.

Mr. Peter

Adesh said that she decided to record the encounter because her pleas and that of her husband were ignored by officials who insisted to take them to the Local Government office where Mr. Peter told them to pay N15,000 fine in order to be released.

“The man beat me, kicked me, pushed me and punched me because of N15,000,” she said. Calling on the State Governor to “see how the officials they put in the office are treating citizens.”

Responding, the Transition Chairman of Ifo Local Government, Fola Salami, said “it came as a rude shock to me, when I saw the video of one of our officials enforcing the lockdown order with gross inhumane attitude.”

“On this note, I am suspending all officials involved without pay, until further notice… The public should be aware all hands are on deck on this issue and whoever is found guilty will be dealt with decisively.

“Meanwhile, as at the time of this release, the primary official involved has been arrested,” Salami stated.
