Barely two days after the death of the Homun Bachama, paramount ruler of the Bachama Kingdom in Adamawa State, Homun Honest  Stephen ,  over six ruling clans have indicated interest to contest for the position. It was gathered that top government officials and two former paramilitary are among those jostling for the position.

The Paramount monarch of Bachama Kingdom, Honest Stephen, dead on Sunday after brief illness and funeral rights were observed according to Bachama tradition in Lamurde, the Kingdom’s headquarters.

The issue of which royal clan should produce Stephen’s successor will be a straight fight between the six dominant royal clans in the Bachama chiefdom.

The six royal clans to vie for the stool of the Hama Bachama are Kowo, Magbularon, Impang, Waduku, Nomupo, and Nokodomun.

Prominent contenders of the exalted throne include Mr Wuni Tela Mbi (retired Custom Officer) and Mr Daniel Shaga Ismail( retired  NDLEA officer).

Another school of thought had  saw the possibility of returning of the former deposed monarch Mr Fredditi Soditi Bongo.

Bongo, was first deposed and banished to Bali in Taraba State, by the Boni Haruna administration, following a clash between Hausa-Fulani Muslims and Bachama Christians.

An informed source confided to our reporter that, ‘’ For now, over nine  prominent persons within the dominant royal clans in the kingdom have indicated their interest for the stool.

‘’ There are some within the kingmakers that are championing the case of the former ruler Freddie Soditi Bongo.

‘’ You know in Bachama land, the monarch has absolute authority as he is being regarded as king for life, except of course, he is deposed, like Freddie Soditi Bongo, who was sacked in 2004.

‘’ So there are some that regards him as still king, because he didn’t relinquish the paraphernalia, and all the two monarchs that took over- Asaph Zadok and Honest Stephen had died after spending only eight years each.

‘’ There is strong fear that his counsel and member of House of Represenattive   Kwamoti La’ori an ally to the incumbent governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri may work for him to return, ‘’ said the source.

As Bachama traditional council kept mute on the names of princes jostling for the exalted stool, an impeccable source added, that Princehood in Bachama land is by reason of being born into any of these clans, and not necessarily by being fathered by a monarch.

“Eligibility is by birth and maturity from age 18. It is open to males only who feel personally convinced to contest. Ascension is not from father to son. As a matter of fact, there is no record that a direct descendant of Hama Bachama inherited the stool,” source said.

“It is not possible for the Hama Bachama to be appointed without following this process. Even as the state government has the final say, government can only reject a selected bidder, but cannot play a role in the selection,’’ he noted.
