Culture & TraditionNewsSelection of New Hamma Bachama Gets Hot As Kingmakers In ‘crucial meeting’

For now, the contest for the exalted throne of a new paramount ruler for the Bachama chiefdom in Adamawa state is getting hot with six prominent personalities within the ruling clans slugging in.

Earlier last week  Bachama communities concluded “Folshe” –the breaking of effects pots and decorated calabashes as a mark of honour for the passage of Hama Bachama Honest Irmiya Stephen, Kwirei-Mana, Kpafrato II Gbulumbomo.

The late monarch passed away last month at the age of 66 and funeral rites were observed at Shafe in Lamurde, with Chief Kingmaker Nzopwato leading the group.

Already, as enshrined in the Bachama tradition, the kingmakers-Zeke and Kabe will have a joint meeting at any moment to decide on a candidate to be arrived at as the new Homun Bachama.

Multiple sources in the chiefdom confirmed that the kingmakers are under pressure not to prolong the selection process so as not to be hijacked or influenced by any authority.

‘’ We don’t want external influence or to be hijacked by those close to the government, the normal traditional way have to be followed which stipulates that rulership according to our tradition is rotational in principle.

‘’ All the contenders for the stool are from six ruling clans and Magbaulanon had it last,’’ said a closed ally to one of the contenders.

The six royal clans to vie for the stool of the Hama Bachama are Kowo, Magbularon, Impang, Waduku, Nomupo, and Nokodomun.

Speaking, Chief Timawus Mathias Nzobyalata Hamma Bachama and spokesman of the Bachama palace said the selection process was being observed according to Bachama rites.

‘’ ” The kingmakers are referred to as the Kabe, born into the clan, not appointed ever, and sworn to a credible process of transition of the Kings, unhindered.

“They select the King, they never become the King. They alone enter the Venti vying, the mausoleum of all the past 28 Kings of the Bachama Kingdom.

‘’ So, let’s wait for the selection process be concluded,’’ he told VOA Hausa.

Prominent contenders of the exalted throne include Daniel Shaga Ismail (retired NDLEA officer), Wuni Tailor Mbi (retired Custom Officer), Kusari Adanko, Gusadi Ahilaga, Phineas Bongi and Eunicee Bwakalyara among others.

Already, a memorial church service was conducted in Numan while church ministers organized prayer sessions for wisdom in the selection process.
