Concerned by the increasing violation of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the government directives meant to curb the spread COVID-19, Osun State is considering deploying mobile courts across the State.
In addition to the deployment of mobile courts, it will also replace payment of fines with hours of community service by persons found guilty.
In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Funke Egbemode, following an Executive Council meeting, the government said many Osun citizens have disregarded the use of face mask and violated restrictions on social gatherings.
“…Inspite of all that has done to enforce the safety guidelines – including lockdown, security operations, and sensitization – a large number of people still move around without their face mask, while some are beginning to convene parties and social gatherings,” the statement partly read.
The government said that the continued violation of safety rules will worsen the active community transmission of the virus in the State.
“The State Government will, therefore, look to deploy extra measures in the days ahead to upscale its fight against the pandemic. Part of the measures will be the deployment of a mobile court to conduct instant trials of defaulters, and the prescription of community service to serve as deterrence to defaulters of the NCDC and state government’s guidelines.”
Meanwhile, the Osun State government said that schools would be reopened when all safety precautions are put in place.
“With respect to the reopening of schools to students in graduating classes for the sake of writing WASCE, our schools shall be reopened after the government has put in place every necessary precaution to ensure that our children are not exposed the virus.
“Part of the measures is to ensure this shall be the deployment of ‘Class Wardens’ in schools across the State (once the reopening is announced), who will daily monitor and ensure strict compliance to the safety guidelines,” the Government said.
