EducationNewsUNILAG Announces New Acting Vice Chancellor

The Governing Council of the University of Lagos has named Professor Theophilus Soyomno as acting Vice-Chancellor following the removal of Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe on Wednesday, over a series of allegations including abuse of office and financial misconduct.

In a statement, the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Oladejo Azeez, announced Prof Soyombo’s appointment and stressed that the former Vice-Chancellor was lawfully removed.

“My attention has been drawn to a document circulating under the hand and signature of the former Vice-Chancellor of University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS. The letter purports to deny his removal by the Governing Council of University at its Emergency Meeting of Wednesday, August 12, 2020,” Azeez said.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I am in my capacity as Registrar and Secretary to Council. The only custodian of the minutes of Council and the authorizing officer on behalf of Council to issue official statements pertaining to all Council Affairs.

“Members of the public hereby disregard the statement attributed to the said former Vice-Chancellor. The position remains that he was lawfully removed by the Governing Council at a meeting fully attended by all Council members.

“I also wish to use the opportunity to inform members of the public that Council at the said meeting duly appointed Professor Theophilus Omololu Soyombo of the Faculty of Social Sciences, the University of Lagos as Vice-Chancellor of the University in an Acting Capacity.”

However, Professor Ogundipe has described his removal as ‘untrue and a figment of imagination’ and insisted that he remains the Vice Chancellor as he was unlawfully removed.

The West African Pilot News reported that the spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Egoong, yesterday, said that the Ministry was not aware of the removal of Professor Ogundipe, but maintained that the Governing Council of the University had the power to hire and fire.

Meanwhile, the Nation reported that the Academic Staff Union of Universities in UNILAG has called for an emergency meeting on Thursday, to deliberate on the removal of Professor Ogundipe.
