The Strengthening Education in Northeast Nigeria (SENSE) program run by the American University of Nigeria (AUN) funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has launch twenty-two Teacher Resource Centres TRI in both Adamawa and Gombe states.

The centers were renovated and equipped by SENSE will serve as an avenue for professional development and create simple teaching and learning materials that learners can manipulate interactive learner-centered classroom activities.

At the formal launch of the program, the President American University of Nigeria (AUN), Professor Dawn Dekle said the project is one of the humanitarian projects of the Atiku Centre which has continued to impact the educational future of people in many ways.

Professor Dawn Dekle who was represented by Dr. Abubakar Abba Tahir, Vice President Public Relations, AUN while noted that Teacher Resource Center is a layer in the educational system for learning in communities.

She the center will create teaching and learning materials, which beneficiaries could easily manipulate in interactive learner-centered classroom activities for the benefit of our young men and women.

 “We are convinced that inaugurating the TRCs at the LGA level is a critical step in fast-racking the sustainable professional development of teachers, and also a crucial element in the production of key teaching materials for the majority of beneficiaries who are located outside our State Capitals.

“The AUN, through the instrumentality of the Atiku Center, its many partners, and donor agencies, will continue to collaborate and upscale the educational needs of communities in more ways”. Prof Dawn said.

AUN President explained that the alliance between Gombe and Adamawa states is a significant step in creating sustainable solutions to the many challenges that have bedeviled teachers and learners in schools.

Dr. Dawn hoped that all the resources made available will be deployed and utilized for the greater good of the greatest number so that donors and partners will continue to have confidence in the work, and continue supporting humanitarian initiatives for the people and country.

She thanked the leadership of the Atiku Center, its staff, partners, and financiers for their hard work, commitment, and unedited generosity in propelling and repositioning the educational future of youngsters.

Deputy Chief of the Party, Dr. Grace Malgwi who gave brief on the Teacher Resource Centres (TRC) explained that the establishment of the TRCs is a collaborative effort between SENSE and the governments of Adamawa and Gombe states and USAID funded SENSE activity is to fill the gap by providing a Teacher Resource Centre at the Local Government Level nearer to the teachers since Education Resource Centres already exist at the state level.

The teaching and learning materials to be produced by the teachers will include manipulative such as flashcards, charts, posters, letters on a pebble, and sand trays among others. Teachers will also be trained on how to get learners to draw and create pictures and posters that can be displayed in their classrooms. She added.
In their remarks, Adamawa State Commissioner for Education and Human Development Mrs. Wilbina Jackson and Executive Chairman State Basic Education Board Dr. Salihi Ateequ reaffirmed the commitment of the state government to ensure the sustenance of the centers for building the capacity of teachers.
