The Federal Medical Centre Yola has recorded another feat with the separation of conjoined twins who were brought to the Centre from Nembe in Bayelsa state. This is the third kind of operation conducted by the centre.

The first was in 2013, the second was in 2018, while the third one was conducted on 10th August this year by a team forty-eight team led by Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Professor Auwal Mohammed Abubakar that lasted for three hours

Speaking at the National Press conference organized by Centre that heralded the discharge of twins, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Barrister Boss Mustapha while commending the feat achieved by the centre under the leadership of Professor Auwal Mohammed Abubakar, said the government will do everything to ensure that all the necessary to build an edifice so that the centre can compete Internationally in the provision of medical services.

He saluted the Air force for the generous gesture of airlifting the conjoined twins and their parents from Yenagoa and Yola, describing it as the bond of togetherness as Nigerians despite differences of ethnic, social status, and faith people stand to assist one another during the need.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation Barrister Boss Mustapha

Barrister Mustapha while thanking the beneficiaries of the surgery for the trust to come to North for the exercise urged them to be Ambassadors of North to preach the generosity, goodness and kindness of people in the North that has been bestowed on them.

He stated that they are now the ambassadors that can preach unity and oneness of the country.

In his message, Minister of Health (state) Senator Olorunimbe Mamora represented by Medical Director Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, Dr. Aisha Shehu while congratulating the team that conducted the surgery, said the Ministry will continue to encourage all its agencies health agencies to engage in such procedures.

He said the ministry is determined to improve the health sector in all its ramifications from basic to the specialized ones.

Also in a message, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri represented by his Chief of Staff Professor Maxwell Gidado described the feat as commendable which has placed Adamawa state on the world map as a destination of quality health care services.

He appealed to the Federal Government to consider upgrading the FMC Yola to Conjoined Twins Separation Centre, status befitting medical breakthrough that has been witnessed since its establishment and hopes that Adamawa state will remain a pacesetter in the health sector.

In his speech, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadeeq Baba Abubakar represented by Air Commodore Gideon Bako said on second January this year Nigerian Air Force airlifted the set of conjoined twins Mercy and Grace along with the medical team from Bayelsa to the FMC Yola for surgery and it is heartwarming to see the girls enjoy life as independent individuals.

The Chief of Air staff congratulated CMD FMC Yola and the team for achieving this feat, said with the quick recovery from surgery, NAF will provide a special flight for the twins and their parents back to Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.

In his presentation, the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Professor Auwal Mohammed Abubakar said the two female twins were conjoined at the abdomen and successfully separated.

Professor Abubakar stated that the treatment was free of charge and urged governments to support the parents of the twins, whose low level of income cannot carter for the babies.

The Father of the twins Raphael Ayebaiemi confirmed that he had not paid a single kobo for the surgery, appreciated the team of the operation and thanked the MD and other staff of FMC for the hospitality given to him throughout their stay at the hospital

He appeals to the Federal Government to upgrade the FMC Yola to Teaching Hospital.
