Awka — The Anambra State House of Assembly today September 3, proceeded on recess which is to last till October 16, 2020. Each legislative year, legislators normally go on recess after satisfactory performance of their constitutional mandate, which includes lawmaking and oversight functions on the other arms of government.

As of today, the 7th Anambra State House of Assembly has completed a total of seventy-two sittings in its lifetime that is now exactly one year, two months, and twenty-one days. Between their inaugural sitting on June 13 2019 and December 2019 when the Assembly went on Christmas break, they had thirty-two sittings. However, between January 2020 and September 2020, a period of almost nine months, the Assembly had only forty sittings.

Anambra State House of Assembly usually had their sittings twice in a week; on Tuesdays and Thursdays only, except when there arises a need for more sittings within a week. However, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially during the lockdown, the Assembly was unable to meet for a little over a month. When sitting resumed with relaxation of the lockdown, the House sitting was further minimized to just once in a week and this lasted for a while before it was reversed to the usual twice in a week.

It is expected that the legislators use this recess to deepen their legislative competence, engage their constituents constructively, get some rest and attend to their other concerns so that they will resume with new vigor and sterner focus on making sustainable laws in the best interest of Anambra people. Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Legislative Matters has described the performance of the legislators so far as “creditable”. This according to Hon. Amala Anazodo is due to “the resilience of the members in doing their job despite the pandemic, their performance so far is creditable. I am confident they will do better upon their return”, Hon. Amala Anazodo said.
