The Anambra State Police Command today arrested two suspected members of a cult group, in Awka the Anambra State capital and recovered a pistol and live ammunitions from the suspects. It would be recalled that for a few weeks now, there is an ongoing cult war that has led to the death of many young boys around Awka.
The suspects, 21 years old Obiako Chukwujekwu from Umudioka village in Awka and 27 years old Emmanuel Ogbonna from Ikwo in Ebonyi state but resides in Awka, were arrested today at about 2pm by a team of police patrol attached to the Police ‘B’ Division in Awka.
In a statement made available to the press by the Anambra state Police Public Relations Officer; SP Haruna Mohammed, he noted that “it would be recalled that of recent, cases of cult clash was on the increase in Awka prior to the commencement of a robust 24hours patrol by the Command Rapid Response Squad and other patrol teams in the state”.
Providing further detail of the arrest, SP Haruna narrated that the police patrol team intercepted a tricycle carrying “two occupants behaving in a suspicious manner”.
According to the statement by the PPRO, “a bag was concealed inside the tricycle and upon search of the bag, English made baretta pistol with filled out breach number loaded with three rounds of 9mm live ammunition was recovered there from. The suspects were promptly arrested”.
Speaking further on the arrest of the suspects, the Anambra state PPRO also informed that the suspects are providing useful information to the police. “Suspects are assisting the police with useful information to unravel their motive of being in possession of prohibited firearm after which they will be brought to justice”, the statement reads.
