NewsOnly 16% Of Nigerian Households Have Access To Basic Hygiene – Report

A recent survey by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources (FMWR) has revealed that only 16% of households in Nigeria have access to basic hygiene services in Nigeria.

Findings from the survey showed that the percentage of Nigerian households with access to basic hygiene services dropped to 16%, a 5 percent point decline from the preceding year.

The new survey which is on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH NORM) was published this month. It is the second edition of the annual survey designed by the FMWR and executed in collaboration with NBS and UNICEF.

The survey is fashioned to provide credible data for policy formulation, planning and monitoring of the WASH sector in the country.

Finding from the survey showed that access to basic hygiene services varies across the six geo-political zones, with the North-east having the lowest access at 9 per cent and the North-west having the highest at 21%.

About 44 per cent of the population have access to basic sanitation services, while 23 per cent of Nigerians continue to practice open defecation.

Access to basic sanitation also varies by area of residence with urban centre leading by 21% . Only 14% of household have access sanitation in rural areas.

The survey further revealed that only 9% of the entire population have access to water, sanitation and hygiene combined.

About 171 million people are off the SDG target for access to safely managed drinking water supply services with only 14% of the population having access to safely managed drinking water supply services.
