The National Mathematical Centre Abuja and Sustainable Development Goals have trained sixty (60) students and twelve (12) teachers on Abacus Mental Arithmetic/Mathematics in Adamawa State.
Participants were selected from Government Day Junior Secondary School Ladi Atiku, Jimeta and Government Day Junior Secondary School Yola town and drilled for two weeks.
The training was designed to improve teachers’ and students’ knowledge of Mental Arithmetic with the use of Abacus, expose them to gain more knowledge on teaching and learning mathematics and other related subjects as well as improve students’ confidence in mathematics.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the programme. Adamawa State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Mrs Wulbina Jackson lauded the National Mathematical Center and Sustainable Development Goals for the training offered to both students and teachers in public schools.
She reiterate the State Government commitment towards sustaining the programme, explained that Governor Ahmadu Umar Fintiri is always passionate about education.
Jackson, charged the beneficiaries to step down what they have learnt to their colleagues and students so as to achieve the aim of the training.
In his welcome address, the Director/Chief Executive National Mathematical Center Abuja Prof Stephen Onah said the training marks the beginning of another milestone in the history of mathematics education development in Adamawa.
He noted that the knowledge acquired by the participants is capable of changing the story of mathematics and mathematical science in their lives.
Onah added that one of the mandates of the center is engaging in talent hunt, encouraging and training young Nigerians in the area of mathematical science.
