As startling revelations continued to trail, a victim of police brutality, Mr. Nicks Kaino has told Adamawa  State Judicial Commission of Inquiry how police ‘ killed’  his son, Kane, aged 24 years, as another victim Yohanna Vandi accused the police of detaining him in a police cell with six others which caused  him to lose a contract of three hundred thousand naira (N300,000).

In his submission, through a counsel, Barr. Leonard D. Nzadon the father of late Kane had accused police of brutally killing his son.

The Petitioner Mr Nicks Kaino, is a Medical Laboratory Scientist who retired from the Adamawa State Health Services Management Board in November, 2018 and is the father of Mr Kane Nicks Kaino who was alleged to have been brutally murdered by some Policemen at Wuro Hausa Divisional Police Office on 9 April 2019.

The mother was a member of staff of the Adamawa Broadcasting Cooperation (ABC) and retired from service on 19 July, 2018.

The Petitioner and his wife Mrs Francisca Nicks Kaino have five (5) children.

Late Kane Nicks Kaino was the second born. He was born on the 24″ day of December, 1995 at the Yola Specialist Hospital. He was at the time of his death aged 24 years, 3 months and 16 days.

It was gathered that, at the time of his death, late Kane had been offered admission into the Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTech), Yola to read Zoology. Both his mother Mr Francisca Nicks Kaino and he were staying in an apartment at Wuro – Chekke, Yola.

Nick’s prayers

In his prayers before the panel the father of the deceased asks that:  ‘’The soul of Kane cries for justice. A young undergraduate of 24 years of age has been brutally murdered for no reason at all and his murderers are hiding under official uniforms to escape justice, this should not be.’’

Mr Kaino wants the panel to order the commissioner of Police, Adamawa State Police Command to produce the Policemen on duty at the Wuro-Hausa Police Station on 9/4/2019 who took the late Kane to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola where he was pronounced dead.

Not only that, the petitioner also prayed that the said policemen be prosecuted for the offences of conspiracy and culpable homicide of Kane Nicks Kaino punishable under Section 221 of the Penal Code.

‘’ We also want the police to pay compensation of One Hundred Millions Naira (N100,000, 000.00) only for the unlawful killing of our son,’’ he prayed.

Also testifying , one Yohanna Vandi, a resident of Hayin-Gada in Girei Local Government area had  accused the police of detaining him in a police cell with six others which cause him to lose a contract of three hundred thousand naira (N300,000) with an anticipation of getting fifty thousand naira (N50,000) as profit on completion of the work.

In his words, ‘’ I was arrested on the 21st March 2020 alongside six of my friends and we were detained from 10.PM up to the next day at about 2.30 PM the following day before we were released without being charged in court,” Vandi said.

After cross-examination by the police counsel, DSP Bamanga Abana Officer –In-Charge (O/C) Legal of the Adamawa State Police Command, Vandi had affirmed that he was not tortured or brutalized, but however claimed that each of them had to cough five thousand naira (N5, 000) as bail fee.

When asked whether he has a document to back his alleged contract, Mr. Yohanna Vandi said he has no such document.

During the sitting, the police counsel had asked the commission to give him ample time to prepare for Mr. Nicks Kaino petition and that of one Kabiru Ahmed as the hearing notice served to him did not bear the name of the petitioners and requested for adjournment to Wednesday.

 Lead Counsel to the petitioner, Barr Leonard Zidon did not object to the request.

Reacting, the commission chairman, Retired Justice Adamu Hobon, therefore, adjourned the hearing to enable police get prepare for the defense, but however cautioned against ‘’ unnecessary seeking for adjournment.’’

Hobon assured petitioners not to cast doubt or entertain any fear, ‘’ I can assure you that this  commission will consider all parties involved.

“The Commission has at hand lawyers and experienced staff on the ground to assist any person who wants to complain to do so properly free of charge, victims of police brutality and related cases to come forward as the Commission has a time limit to complete the assignment.

“The Commission has in place some officials to serve as translators who will assist victims who cannot understand or speak in English during proceedings,” Hobon said.
