There was trouble for the traders on Friday evening at the popular New Benin Market in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State when suspected armed robbers invaded the area and shot sporadically.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command paraded 34 suspects arrested for various criminals offences; and highlighting an increase in the crime rate in different parts of the state.
The armed men who attacked the market robbed the traders and market women of their cash and other valuables. And, by the time they left, three people had been killed in the process.
Several shops belonging to Igbo traders were robbed and looted in the ever busy commercial area. The robbers did not have much troubles in the course of their robbery as traders had scampered to safety away from the bullets.
Mostafa traders whose shops were located along Mission Road area of the market were not spared even as market the women and road side traders ran away from their goods to safety.
The heavily armed men opened fire to scare the people away and that really worked for them as no one challenged them.
The police and some traders chased after the robbers. The fleeing robbers opened fire on anybody on sight when they sensed danger and killed two persons on the spot and wounded others.
A middle aged girl, who was also shot, is reportedly struggling with life. The hoodlums reportedly escaped through the New Lagos Road end of the market. Traders and motorists were said to have scampered for safety as the bandits shot sporadically as they fled.
