At least five persons were feared injured when two factions of the commercial tricycles riders unions, ACOMORAN, and its arch-rival NURTW clashed in Numan town of Adamawa state, eyewitnesses and security sources have said.
Before the clash, there has been cat-and-mouse politics between the two factions over rights to control commercial tricycles riders.
Local sources said that the clash ensued on Friday when some officials of ACOMORAN attacked some riders who are members of NURTW in a free-for-all- fight along with Numan –Gombe road.
‘’The ACOMORAN union was first to start operating in Numan for some years, however, the advent of the newly established NURTW tricycle unit came as a challenge to the ACOMORAN.
‘’ So, the leadership of ACOMORAN under the chairmanship of one Pwati Hunkuso took the law into their hands on Friday, by beating any rider who is registered with NURTW and thereby destroying about 50 tricycles belonging to NURTW members.
‘’ As I am talking to you over five riders were injured.
‘’ They threatened that no other union would operate in Numan apart from ACOMORAN despite a series of meetings and warnings to them by our paramount ruler HRH the Hama Bachama Dr. Daniel Shags Ismail,’’ said a commercial tricycle rider who simply identified himself as Dogo.
For now, efforts to draw words out of the police divisional officer (DPO) in charge of Numan have been futile but an inside source at the station had confided that the factional chairman Mafan Nahun and secretary Usher Hunkono of the NURTW tricycle unit had reported the matter to the DPO Numan division.
At the moment there is no movement of commercial tricycles within Numan town.
