Anambra State House of Assembly resumed sitting today after the Christmas and New Year break that lasted for about three weeks.

Earlier at the Assembly Complex in Awka, Anambra state capital, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vincent Okpara with his team came on a COVID-19 sensitization and to also address the concerns of the House members on the second wave of the pandemic. This was followed by the COVID-19 test conducted by the team on staff members of the House as well as Honourable members of the Assembly. In all, about twenty Honourable members presented themselves voluntarily for testing.

Meanwhile, the tenure of the Transition Committee elected by the House every three months throughout the twenty-one local government area of Anambra state has elapsed. However, the House was unable to elect them, as some members raised serious objections to the election of the same transition committee members to the local government for years. There are concerns that most of the transition chairmen have been in office for almost four years; a development that many APGA party faithful are no longer happy with. “It is as if political benefit within the party is revolving around the same people for almost eight years. Why would you keep recycling the same people for years at the local government, are they the only people in the party in their local governments? Is this how the party intends to win the coming governorship election?”, said a notable APGA stalwart who does not want to be mentioned.

It was very clear from the facial expressions and body language of the House members that they were no longer comfortable with the development, although many declined to make a public comment on the issue. However, it is not clear if there are other grievances for which the House failed to renew the tenure of the local government transition committee.

Today’s sitting lasted for only a few minutes before the House was adjourned to the next sitting day.
