ENUGU — The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has decried multiple litigations trailing primary elections in most political parties in Anambra.

The Chairman of CLO, Anambra, Mr. Vincent Ezekwueme, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Tuesday that the development was unhealthy for democratic growth in Anambra.

Ezekwueme said that the latest development was a threat to democratic spirit and principle in its entirety.

He noted that the latest development was a fall out of the acrimonious primary elections conducted by major political parties which necessitated avoidable litigations.

According to him, CLO pleads with aggrieved aspirants in various parties for the interest of sustenance of our hard-won democracy and the state to withdraw all litigations against primary elections.

“It is pertinent for political parties to call their overzealous members to order and pacify those they have wronged in the cause of conducting the primary elections,” he said.

The CLO boss noted that it was worthy of note that without internal democracy, it will be very difficult, if not impossible to guarantee external democracy during main election.

“Because anyone who manipulated primary election will as well do everything possible to manipulate the main election which is contrary to democratic norms and one-man, one-vote principle which is the beauty of democracy,” he said.

Ezekwueme, however, extolled some political parties that conducted rancor-free credible primary elections in the state.

“It is a welcomed development and step in the right direction that will contribute immensely towards actualising democracy of our dreams and aspirations,” he said.

He urged political parties to engage in thinking about the next generation, how to mobilise residents to obtain their voters cards, and take an active part in the Anambra Governorship Election scheduled for Nov. 6, 2021.
