ENUGU — A Special Committee on Extortion and other related matters set up by Edward Ubosi Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly to investigate illegal extortions in the state which is contrary to the bid to making the state investor friendly on Tuesday expressed dismay at the flagrant disregard of the legislative arm of government by two top public officers in the state.
The House Committee Chairman on Communication, Jeff Mba, narrated that for the third time, Josef Onoh and Victor Nnam, Chairman of Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, ECTDA and Commissioner for Lands respectively have ignored the invite of the committee.
Briefing journalists Mbah says the committee would submit her report to the Committee of the Whole; their observations as well as challenges encountered in the course of the investigation, at the floor of the House.
According to him, the report would guide the Seventh Assembly to take decision on how best to harmonize taxation in the state with a view to put an end to illegal extortions, multiple taxation and make the state investor friendly.
Referring to the assertion of the special committee that they will employ all constitutional means against the two public officers who defied the invite, Mba said,
“Part of the constitutional process is to send our report to the floor of Enugu State House of Assembly for consideration.
“And in so doing, we are going to mention not only our findings but also all the problems we encountered in the course of discharging our duties. The House will then take a decision on how to deal with both officers; the chairman, Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), Mr. Josef Onoh, and commissioner for Land, Victor Nnam for refusing to appear before the committee”.
