BENIN — A Consultant Dermatologist, Dr. Lilian Osamuyi has advised adults, especially ladies to stop using bleaching cream in order to avoid dermatitis.
Osamuyi who gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday said that there is no health benefit in using bleaching cream.
Dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin caused by contact with certain substances. Case studies and reports have linked the use of skin bleaching products to contact dermatitis.
“From a medical standpoint, there’s no need to lighten the skin. But if you are considering skin bleaching, it is important to understand the risks involved.
“These contents of any bleaching cream can victimize its users in the long run.
”Some of these creams contain mercury that reacts as a poison that can accumulate on the cells of the body and lead to the damages of livers and kidneys.
”It is important to warn against the use of chemicals, injections, and some pills since the effects, in the long run, cannot be averted and in most cases lead to serious damage on the skin,” she said.
According to her, the symptoms may include skin redness, blisters, skin ulcers, hives, dry, scaly skin, swelling, itching. burning and tenderness.
Caro Igbe, who deals in cosmetics said that Nigerian women used creams to maintain their skin complexion, but presently an average Nigerian lady has no trace of her original color.
”One of the reasons people bleach their skin is that they believe it enhances their beauty and makes them more attractive to the opposite sex.
“The most common method was the use of pills, injections, and strong toning creams containing chemicals like hydroquinone, steroids, and mercury which have proven to be effective in skin lightening.
”The most sought-after method for skin lightening in trend is the use of Egyptian magic milk called Kamana since it is more effective than products containing hydroquinone or steroids,” she said.
Another cosmetics dealer, Mrs. Idia Eriamiatoe said many ladies who undergo skin bleaching either go from dark skin to white skin or from chocolate complexion to glowing yellow complexion.
” People sometimes want a fast effect of these creams and use much more than the prescription which has adverse effects and can have negative effects on them.
”The cost of these creams vary but the more expensive, the more effective and probably the less hazardous to the skin it would be,” she said.
