Police have intensified the search for a young man, David Wanyonyi Simiyu who stole cameras and equipment worth almost Sh1 million (N3.6m) from a church in Nairobi, Kenya.
According to a statement by Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Saturday, March 12, the suspect received salvation on Sunday, March 6, at Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) Zimmerman Parish.
However, before the service was over, he proved he had not left behind his old ways by carting away the media equipment while the congregation was deep in prayers.
It was not until the end of the service that the church realised that their cameras were missing and they immediately reported to the police who commenced their probe into the theft.
Intensive investigations revealed that David, a recent convert who had received salvation in the Church, was the mastermind behind the disappearance.
The statement read in part, “Two video cameras and their accessories that were stolen from a city-based Church last Sunday as the service was ongoing, have been recovered by detectives.
“The two professional cameras worth close to Sh1Million disappeared from the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) Zimmerman Parish, as the faithful were deep in prayers.
“It is not until the service was over that the church orderlies noticed the cameras were missing, much to the consternation of the congregants and the clergy.
“The Church leadership notified our detectives and sleuths from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, who immediately took up the matter. It didn’t take long for the revered crime busters to unmask the author of the crime.”
The DCI further disclosed that David sold the media equipment to unscrupulous dealers, noting that forensic examination led detectives to the suspects who bought the equipment and that the two cameras and their accessories have been recovered from the suspects.
“The forensic analysis and surveillance we conducted via the DCI mobile laboratory in Nairobi Central Business District led us to where the suspect sold the equipment,” they said.
The three suspects Joshua Mulei, Douglas Karanja, and Stephen Thuo, who trade in stolen electronic equipment, have been arrested and are currently being held at Muthaiga Police station as detectives intensify a manhunt for the prime suspect, David Simiyu.
Meanwhile, the clergy of PCEA Zimmerman parish have forgiven the prodigal son, David in accordance with the scriptures and have expressed his readiness to welcome him back to the flock.
