ENUGU — The South East leaders have called on political leaders of her zone not to under any circumstances compromise the determination of the South East to get the Presidency of Nigeria in 2023.

Such compromise they said will be viewed with sternness as citizens of the South East, across all parties are expected to work in unity to achieve a South East Presidency in 2023.

These were part of the communiqué issued at the end of the South East Leadership Press Conference organized by Ahamefuna Socio-Cultural Organization on Thursday at The Kobb Event Centre, Shoprite Enugu, Nigeria.

The Organization requests, “All political parties especially the All Progressives Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, should zone their Presidential tickets to the South East in demonstration of equity and fairness, without which our efforts at nation-building would be futile.”

The demand is necessitated in the spirit of the zoning principle on which the country has operated since the current democratic dispensation.

“Our case is simple. Right from the beginning of the current democratic dispensation, there was an understanding even across political parties that power would rotate between the North and South of Nigeria, and between the six geopolitical zones.”

“That understanding has been adhered to, in the general elections of four Presidents over the last 23years. Following the election of President Buhari, a citizen from the North West of Nigeria, whose tenure ends in 2023, power in the spirit of that understanding, should rotate to the South, which consists of three zones, South West, South-South and South-East, we believe that it should rotate to the South East geopolitical zone.”

In his keynote address, Professor Anya O. Anya linked economy, nation-building and leadership.

Anya stated that as we approach 2023, it is trite logic that a given set of problems cannot be solved by those who created them; the leadership we need now must be driven by knowledge, capacity, and integrity.

The erudite Professor applauding the need for Igbos to get Presidency states, “Merit and competence can be found in all zones of Nigeria if we sincerely look for them; also cooperation and collaboration is the traditional norm in pre-colonial Igbo land which can become the norm in the new Nigeria.”

Also speaking at the event, the Obi of Onitsha, Anambra State, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe harped on the need for the Igbos to unite as one to present a candidate for Presidency.

Igwe Achebe further advised the Igbos not to be loud but persevere to achieve her desire; Igbos should also note that the Presidency project is not an end but a means to get what we deserve.

Supporting the Igwe’s assertion, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Callistus Onaga represented by Rev. Dr. Nnamdi Nwankwo states, “Beyond the Presidency of Nigeria coming from Igbo extraction, it is, even more, paramount that the Igbos have an agenda they must collectively support and push for no matter who becomes the President.”

The Reverend gentleman further called on the organizers to put up a formidable group to formulate the Igbo Agenda; this he states should be beyond an Igbo becoming the President of Nigeria come 2023.
