The Presidential Committee on the North East Initiative (PCNI), with the intervention of the Petroleum Equalization Fund (PEF), has handed over the state-of-the-art machine to the management of the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, MAUTH, Yola, Adamawa state.
With high tech medical facilities such as the GE Revolution Evo 128 Slice CT, which was test run, and had the staff with radiology department trained for effective management of the machine, the MAUTH Yola has started CT scanning service.
Mr Ja’afar Othman, who handed over the facilities on behalf of the contracting firm, Yayok Consult International Ltd Megspaff Ltd, said the contract for the supply and installation of the GE Revolution Evo 128 Slice Computerized Tomography, CT, scan has been completed with the manpower training to be able to effectively operate the machine.
“The will combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles around one’s body and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images (slices) of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside one’s body,” he said.
Othman added that the machine actually came with a 120KVA UPS that is installed in the other room that could serve for 20 to 30 minutes when the main grill is off before switching to an alternate power supply.
Receiving the facility on behalf of the management of the health institution, Prof Auwal Muhammad Abubakar, the Chief Medical Director, represented by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr Ahmadu Baba Usman commended the contractors and project consultants for the successful delivery and assured that the facility would be utilized judiciously.
He thanked the federal government for the PEF/PCNI intervention.
In an interview with newsmen after the handing over, the Head of Clinical Services expressed appreciation saying, “this is one of the beautiful moments of this hospital with the receipt of this machine; a state-of-the-art Computerized Tomography, CT scan that has so much inbuilt technology that will be used for our clients. “I believe this will benefit the patients because it will heighten the precision in the way we make diagnosis.
“It also means that the intervention that will be given following the diagnosis will be more accurate,” he said.
Also, in an interview on behalf of the project consultants, Dr Marafa Iya certified that the facility supplied and installed has made the specification standard.
“The machine, having been installed, is test run and the staff with radiology department has had adequate training for efficient administration of the CT scan,” Marafa added.
Commenting, the Head of Radiology Department, Dr Yunusa Dahiru said it is delightful having state-of-the-art diagnostic technology.
“We’re actually delighted. In Radiology, CT is central for diagnosis and all the other clinics depend on Radiology for diagnosis.
“I’m telling you that this is a high grade CT 128 slice that can actually capture the heart at a standstill without you moving because it’s fast and the images superb. “You expect more good diagnoses coming from the radiology department MAUTH Yola. It’s one of its kinds in the whole country.
“I think very few hospitals, some of them private; have 128 slices that can actually image the heart, the colon, the spine and other parts of the body. We’re happy that this programme has come to light.
“In terms of capacity, Dr Yunusa revealed that the machine can take 250 patients per day, assured that the power supply would not be a hindrance.
“The machine is ready for it. I don’t think we have the number of those patients but if we do the machine is big enough to take all the patients.
“We’re also thinking of upgrading it by having an Automatic Voltage Regulator, AVR, so that the power will not only be available but is going to be standard and stable for the machine.
“We also have a standard standby generator that will give us an alternate source of power. I think the hospital is ready”.
“The management of the hospital, particularly, the Medical Director, Prof Auwal Muhammad Abubakar is interested in giving the best services. We’ve let him know that power is very important. That is why when the facility is coming; it came with a brand new transformer only for the complex,” he said.
