ColumnsCorruptionOpinionPoliticsCompulsive and Obsessive Corruption: The Bane of Nigeria Politicians

It is important to begin this contribution by recognizing the fact that man is naturally under the attack of many challenges consistently trying to deplete his reserves. (I use “man” here generically not specifically) It could be a legal tender reserve or moral reserve. No human being is impervious to these attacks.  However, integrity demands that a man should fall back to his moral reserves in the event of the depletion of his bank savings. This is expected to enhance the preservation of his character.

The depletion of a man’s bank reserves is bad enough for it strips him of his confidence, but the depletion of his moral reserves is worse because it bereaves him of his humanity. When one is morally empty, it simply means the person has lost every sense of nobility and virtues. He or she is bereft of the essential capacity for altruism, empathy, and fairness. He loses self-control and becomes bonded with inclinations that do not bother how others are affected. What one now sees is an incurable egoist totally sold out to over-bloated self-esteem. Delusion of grandeur!

This piece deeply regrets to posit that the above picture is the sorry state of the average Nigerian politician.

The post-civil war perplexing trajectory led the country into the hands of people who neither understood the language of selfless service nor believed in mental rehabilitation/social reconstruction. Possessed by sheer parochial zealotry, and driven by their primitive narcissistic mentality, they wrote some satanic pages of retardant notes and handed the grossly-counterfactual compilation over to a bunch of ‘unserious’  civilians in 1979, in the name of democracy. The rest is now history.

Nigerians have continued to quench their thirst for responsible governance with the filthy flood of disillusionment.

The succeeding administrations have continued to make matters worse ever since. Pundits are therefore perpetually struggling to believe that the military progenitors of these pseudo democrats actually designed the system to work. Nigerians have continued to quench their thirst for responsible governance with the filthy flood of disillusionment.

CORRUPTION

Yes, one can say that again and again; the bane of these politicians is corruption! The menace has degenerated to the point where they have become bereft of all moral reserves. They now dance naked in the marketplace without knowing they are naked. They have become destitute of sublime values, and consequently the shame of the nation. No attempt at national rebranding will ever work if it does not begin with the value reorientation of these political players.

A bane can be a trait, attitude, or anything that is not glorious, virtuous, and noble. It is self-defamation of character. It is a mortal handicap.  It is any behavior that smears human dignity, honor, and respect. It is attitudes and traits which attract odium and opprobrium or even death.

GARBAGE BIN OF SHAME.

There is hardly any hall of fame for any Nigerian politician anywhere. All around the world, they are being fed from the garbage basket of shame. No responsible nation respects them.

Umaru Dikko fled to Britain as a result of corruption and narrowly escaped being brought back to Nigeria in a crate. Governor Alamesiya disguised as a woman in the UK to evade arrest for a corruption case. Mr. Maina displayed a most animalistic moral malevolence by diverting pension funds meant for senior citizens of Nigeria who gave this nation they were all in the trenches of nation-building sacrifices, long before he was born. Repeated peaceful demonstrations had been held in UK by Nigerians over there against Buhari while on medical tourism, telling him to go back home and fix the hospitals.

What a monumental disgrace of the leader of Africa’s most populous nation! Sani Abacha stole the patrimony of many Nigerian generations unborn and starched it away in foreign banks. IBB callously milked the nation’s treasury during his reign and amassed one of the most primitive wealth in human history. He acquired choice properties that he won’t ever need around the world including the most exotic/sprawling housing estate in Alexandria Egypt.

Senator Ekweremmadu was beaten and rough-handled in Germany by his own Igbo kinsmen as a result of sustained indifference to their yearnings and aspirations. Tinubu one of the current presidential candidates for the 2023 elections crafted a piece of fraudulent machinery via which he is ruling and milking Lagos State since 1999. He is amongst the world’s richest men today in addition to owning almost half of the choice areas of Lagos State. The list is endless.

As it is in the southern geopolitical zone, so it is in the northern part. Nigeria seems to be perpetually bedeviled by a heathenish cult of elite public servants who have demonic penchants for acquiring unneeded riches and choice properties around the world, while most of the citizens live under the bridges. This is utter depravity and an abandoned elevation of wickedness.

And it would be absolutely naive for anyone to say they do not deserve what they get.

The three tiers of government are actively involved In this sustained pillaging of the peoples’ commonwealth.  Posterity will continue to dishonor them in the full glare of the world. And it would be absolutely naive for anyone to say they do not deserve what they get.

Someone once wrote that the corruption of Nigeria’s political elites is no longer that of necessity. It has also gone beyond that of greed. It has become that of lunacy! I agree with this school of thought in totality.

All indicators are indeed lucid pointers to the fact that the Nigerian ship of state is, unfortunately, being piloted by crew members who are hopelessly enslaved by compulsive and obsessive desires for corruption even without identifiable needs for the proceeds.

This is in fact not only the bane of the drivers, but it is also the predicament and the misery of the passengers!
