Nigerian athlete, Oluwatobiloba “Tobi” Amusan on Sunday defended her world championship title after winning the women’s 100m hurdles gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Amusan, 25, crossed the finishing line in 12.30s, setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the Women’s 100m Hurdles.

She finished ahead of Devyne Charlton and Cindy Sember who came second and third in 12.58s and 12.59s respectively.

“Honestly, I believe in my abilities but I was not expecting a world record at these championships,” Channels TV quoted Amusan as saying after her final victory.

“The goal is always just to execute well and get the win. So the world record is a bonus. I knew I had it in me but I could not believe it when I saw it on the screen after the semis.

“Before the final, I just tried to stay calm and to do my best. I took a deep breath knowing that I have some goals to accomplish and it worked pretty well. I knew it was very fast but not this fast.”

With the gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Amusan is now the first and only Nigerian to be crowned African, Commonwealth, and World champion in the same year.

Following her feat, Team Nigeria has now secured 33 medals — 11 gold medals, 8 silver medals, and 14 bronze medals — at the ongoing Commonwealth Games.

The team is currently sixth on the overall medals table.
