The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has promised Lagos residents that there will be peaceful elections on Saturday, March 18, during the governorship and State House of Assembly polls,
The governor gave the assurance in a statement by Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, which was made available to journalists on Friday.
While allaying fears over the traditional rites currently taking place in some parts of the state, the statement noted: “Following the recent announcement of some customary rites by traditional rulers, the government wishes to assure all residents of the security of lives and properties in the state.”
The statement noted that while the Lagos government reiterates the freedom of religion, it also cautions that traditional institutions holding this customary rites should ensure that these activities do not infringe on the fundamental rights of all the residents who are not of this faith, especially during the course of the elections.
He advised Lagos State residents to go about their civic duties as the state government will ensure that all security personnel are at the alert to guarantee the peace and safety of the lives of the residents of Lagos State, before, during and after the elections.
“Anybody planning to foment trouble will have the law to contend with. Our state is peaceful and it will remain so,” Sanwo-Olu warned.
