Popular Nigerian social media personality Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, has been sentenced to six months in prison without the option of a fine by the Federal High Court in Lagos.
He was convicted on charges of abusing the naira, Nigeria’s national currency, and defacing, mutilating, or exhibiting disrespect to the naira in videos posted on his social media platforms.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, brought the charges against Bobrisky.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro, who presided over the case, found Bobrisky guilty of four out of the six-count charge initially filed by the EFCC. The remaining two charges, related to money laundering allegations, were dismissed due to lack of sufficient evidence.
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has strict regulations regarding the handling of the currency, and Bobrisky’s case has drawn national attention to these regulations. This verdict marks a significant development in efforts to protect the integrity of the naira.
Reacting to the sentence, Bobrisky’s lawyer, Mr Ayo Olumofin, stated his intention to appeal the verdict. However, Bobrisky will remain in custody at the EFCC facility pending the outcome of the appeal process.
