A new report by Amnesty International has painted a grim picture of violence in Plateau State, revealing a death toll of 1,336 people over three months.
The report, unveiled during a “Photo Exhibition on the Impact of Conflicts” in Jos last Thursday, focused on attacks that took place between December 2023 and February 2024.
Isa Sanusi, Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, highlighted the brutality of the violence, stating that women and children were not spared.
The report details that 533 women, 263 children, and 540 men were killed in the attacks. Additionally, 29,554 people were displaced from their homes, with women (16,461) and children (13, 093) making up a significant portion of those forced to flee.
Sanusi emphasized that the figures were compiled through thorough findings conducted by Amnesty International in collaboration with government agencies. He said communities in Mangu, Bokkos, and Barkin-Ladi local government areas were particularly affected.
Amnesty International’s report serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing violence plaguing Plateau State and parts of Nigeria.
The organisation has called on the Nigerian authorities to ensure that those responsible for the killings are brought to justice through fair trials.
“We urge the government to investigate security lapses that enabled gunmen to carry out these attacks and get away with it,” said Sanusi.
“Those with the responsibility of protecting lives and property must be held to account and special attention be paid to how the conflict affects children.”
