Residents of Awka, the capital city of Anambra State, are gripped with a growing fear as cult-related killings escalate. Almost every week, reports of violent clashes and brutal murders circulate through the community, leaving many in shock and a sense of helplessness.
Once known as a thriving center of trade and development, Awka is now grappling with a crisis that affects nearly every neighborhood and puts lives in jeopardy.
Over the past months, cult activities in Awka have intensified, with gangs vying for dominance and control of various territories within the city.
These clashes, primarily between rival cult groups, have led to fatalities among youths, leaving many parents and community members devastated.
Residents now live in dread, concerned that these attacks could easily claim the lives of innocent bystanders.
One resident, Mrs Chiamaka Adibe expressed her frustration: “We can no longer sleep with peace of mind. Every night, we worry if we will make it to see the morning. Our children are no longer safe, and it feels as though the police are not doing enough to protect us.”
She attributed the spike in cult-related violence to multiple factors, including unemployment, poverty, and peer pressure among youths.
In many cases, young people are lured into cultism with promises of protection, social status, or financial gain.
However, this path often leads to tragedy, as rivalries turn deadly, and individuals once seen as friends become foes in a violent cycle of retribution.
Security agencies have made efforts to clamp down on cultists, conducting raids and setting up surveillance in known hotspots. Yet, these efforts have proven insufficient in quelling the violence, as gang members quickly regroup and retaliate. This vicious cycle has left residents doubting the ability of the security forces to restore peace.
According to another resident, Mr. Obinna Okoye “We want the government to do something urgently, “How can we go about our businesses when we fear for our lives? We need both the police and the government to act decisively.”
In response to the crisis, civic groups and religious leaders in Awka are rallying to engage youths, offering counseling and skill acquisition programs as alternatives to cultism. Additionally, stakeholders advocate for a joint task force between the police, community vigilante groups, and local government to ensure sustained security in the region.
As the people of Awka continue to live in fear, one message remains clear: the time for action is now. The safety of residents cannot be compromised, and it falls on both the government and community leaders to work collectively to dismantle cult structures, provide opportunities for youths, and restore lasting peace to Awka.
