President Bola Tinubu has written to the National Assembly seeking the confirmation of Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff, COAS.
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the President sent separate letters to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Friday.
The request aligns with the provisions of Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act.
Oluyede was appointed Acting Chief of Army Staff on 30 October 2024, following the illness of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who later died on 5 November.
Prior to his appointment as Acting COAS, Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps in Jaji, Kaduna. He has held several command positions, including Platoon Commander, Company Commander, and Commandant of the Amphibious Training School.
He participated in operations such as the ECOMOG Mission in Liberia, Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi, and Operation HADIN KAI in the North East.
Oluyede has received numerous awards, including the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award.
“President Tinubu is confident about the leadership qualities, professional integrity, and experience of Lt. General Oluyede to lead and inspire the army to ensure national security and stability,” Onanuga noted.
