The House of Representatives has confirmed Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede as Nigeria’s substantive Chief of Army Staff following successful screening sessions by both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
On Wednesday, the Senate Committee on the Army, led by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, screened Oluyede during a closed-door session citing security concerns. Addressing journalists before the session, Yar’adua emphasised the legislative significance of the process.
“The parliament must respect and uphold laws related to national security and governance. This screening exercise is critical to ensuring the effectiveness of our security institutions,” Yar’adua stated. He commended the Armed Forces for their sacrifices in combating insurgency and maintaining national security.
In its Thursday plenary, the House of Representatives unanimously confirmed Oluyede’s appointment, adopting recommendations from an ad hoc committee led by Hon. Babajimi Benson. Benson described Oluyede as “fit and proper,” noting his exceptional qualifications, military expertise, and leadership.
“General Oluyede gave an excellent account of himself during the screening. We are confident in his ability to lead the Nigerian Army effectively,” Benson said.
President Bola Tinubu, in his nomination letter, praised Oluyede’s professionalism and commitment since assuming the position in an acting capacity following the death of Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
