A few hours to Christmas, a report from Plateau state says no fewer than 15 people, including women and children, were killed around 8 pm on Sunday by attackers in Gidan Ado village, Ganawuri Chiefdom of Riyom Local Government of Plateau State.

The Chairman of Riyom Local Government, Sati Shuwa who visited the village in the company of his Deputy, Gwong Song, and Secretary, Abraham Tongjing, also condemned the act.

Shuwa, who attended the mass burial of the dead, who included a pregnant woman and a one-year-old child, said “It was sad, especially as the local government held a security meeting with stakeholders, security agencies, and community leaders on their peaceful existence less than 24 hours before the incident”.

The council chairman expressed sadness that despite the meeting, some people still went ahead and put tears in the hearts of the villagers, saying with evidence and a visit of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) to the scene, drastic measures would be taken to arrest the perpetrators.

The first traditional ruler of Ganawuri Chiefdom, Ata Aten Yakubu Chaimang, and National President of, the Ateng Development Association, Clement Chup also condemned the killings.

Also, Mr Ezekiel Bini, National President of Irigwe Youth Development Association, who confirmed the killing, condemned the attacks describing them as barbaric.

He alleged that the coordinated killing of innocent persons less than a few hours before the Christmas celebration was unacceptable and called on the security agencies and government to curtail any security challenge and protect the citizens ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang had been preaching peace ahead of the yuletide before the incident occurred.

Meanwhile, the Police Command in the state had last Thursday taken security measures ahead of Christmas and restricted five local government areas from 6 pm to 6 am to avert security challenges.
