The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team.
In a statement, the NFF announced that its Executive Committee endorsed the recommendation of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee for Chelle’s appointment during a meeting held in Abuja on 2 January 2025. The endorsement was finalised on 7 January.
“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has endorsed the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee for the appointment of Mr. Éric Sékou Chelle as Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men national football team, Super Eagles,” the NFF said.
Chelle, 47, is a former international footballer who earned five caps for Mali’s national team, the Aiglons.
His coaching experience includes stints at GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran. He has been the head coach of Mali’s national team since 2022.
At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, Chelle’s Mali narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot, losing 2-1 to the host nation after extra time. Mali had led by a lone goal until the final minute of regulation time.
As a player, Chelle represented clubs such as Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais in France.
The NFF confirmed that Chelle’s appointment is with immediate effect.
His immediate task is to lead the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with crucial Matchdays 5 and 6 fixtures scheduled for March.
