…Six Months After Presiding Judge Stepped Down
The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, has reassigned the case of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to a new judge.
This decision comes six months after the previous judge stepped down from the case, which involves treasonable felony charges against Kanu.
Confirming the development, Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, revealed that the legal team received two key official letters just before their scheduled visit to him.
The first, from the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), was a response to their request for administrative intervention in getting the case reassigned. The second, from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, formally notified them of the reassignment.
Kanu, through his legal team, expressed appreciation to the CJN for her prompt action and thanked the public for their continued support in pushing for a fair trial.
Ejimakor noted that the delay, which had persisted since September 2024, was a major concern, as it threatened Kanu’s constitutional right to a fair and speedy trial.
“With this latest development, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his legal team will now focus on preparing his defence,” Ejimakor stated.
Kanu, who has been in detention since June 2021, has consistently maintained his innocence and called for due process in his trial.
The reassignment of the case is expected to set the stage for fresh legal proceedings.
