The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has likened social media to a terrorist organisation, urging Nigerian security agencies to treat it as such.
Speaking at a closed-door meeting of Northern traditional rulers in Maiduguri, the monarch claimed social media platforms spread harmful falsehoods and must be “dealt with” by authorities.
“Somebody can sit in their home and formulate stories, and you will consider that it is true,” he said. “Social media is a terrorist organisation.”
The Sultan also condemned ongoing violence in Plateau and other northern states, calling for stronger government and security force action.
He criticised repeated killings of innocent people and expressed frustration at the ineffectiveness of past condemnations.
“Enough is enough,” he declared, urging unity among northern traditional leaders to pressure political authorities into taking decisive steps against the violence.
He pledged the support of traditional rulers in finding lasting solutions to the insecurity.
