NewsNigeriaPoliticsSoludo to Pay Community Youth Leaders N50,000 Monthly Stipend, Five Months to Election

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has announced his government’s decision to pay the sum of N50,000 to youth leaders across the 181 communities in Anambra State. This decision was conveyed by the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, who represented the governor during a two-day leadership and capacity-building workshop held by the Youth Wing of the Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, in Awka.

The workshop themed, “The Role of ASATU Youth in Deepening and Consolidating Leadership, Security, Governance, and Value System for Community Development in line with the Solution Agenda of Mr. Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo,” was attended by the leaders of ASATU youth wing across the 181 communities of Anambra State and was held at the ASATU secretariat located in the former Anambra State Government House.

In his remark, the President General of the ASATU youth wing, Ken Okoli, commended the governor for the gesture, describing it as the first of its kind. He therefore assured the governor of “100 out of 100 votes” from the youths during the November 8 governorship election.

This development has, however, raised questions around potential undue inducement of community youth leaders by the governor with the payment of N50,000, just five months before the governorship election. The sudden shift by Soludo, who has been governor for over three years, in realizing that youth leaders across Anambra State communities need to be motivated with monthly stipends raises concern. With this action, the governor leaves a trail of vote inducement a few months before the election.

In contrast, the governor’s appointed Executive Assistants earn a monthly sum of N90,000. These are government appointees who go to work daily and make their modest contributions to governance processes as required. The question is if community youth leaders have been converted to the governor’s appointees with or without their consent.
